Study: OVA1 blood test can accurately predict ovarian cancer in women with pelvic masses

A study published online ahead of print in the June 2011 edition of Obstetrics & Gynecology demonstrated that American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology guidelines for determining the likelihood that an ovarian mass is cancerous prior to surgery would accurately identify more women with ovarian cancer if the OVA1 blood test were used in place of the currently recommended CA 125 blood test.

Researchers help explain why smart drugs are not effective in some cancer patients

Some of the most effective and expensive cancer drugs, dubbed "smart drugs" for their ability to stop tumors by targeting key drivers of cancer cell growth, are not effective in some patients. In two related studies, Yale School of Medicine researchers examined one such driver, the EGF receptor, and found that a decoy receptor might be limiting the amount of drug that gets to the intended target.

Swedish adds new virtual reality training simulator to help surgeons practice on robotic-assisted system

As one of the first medical centers in the Northwest to perform robotic-assisted surgery, Swedish is home to the fastest growing, most comprehensive and experienced robotic-assisted surgical program in the region. Swedish established the multidisciplinary, robotic-assisted surgical program in 2005 and has since performed more than 3,400 robotic-assisted surgeries -- more than any other program in the region.

Cytheris SA, a clinical stage biopharmaceutical company focused on research and development of new therapies for immune modulation, the Centre Léon Bérard, the major cancer research and treatment center for the Rhône-Alpes region of France, and ImmunID Technologies SAS, a diagnostic company specialized in innovative immunomonitoring tests and services, today announced initiation of a Phase IIa clinical trial that will evaluate multiple combinations of recombinant human interleukin-7, the investigational multifunctional cytokine under development by Cytheris, and a chemotherapeutic agent, XELODA, in the treatment of metastatic breast cancer.

A new effort led by a University of California, Irvine Medical Center oncologist seeks to improve cancer survival for adolescents and young adults. Dr. Leonard S. Sender has long advocated changing the approach oncologists take when treating patients and survivors aged 15 to 39.

Centocor Ortho Biotech Products withdraws NDA for trabectedin for treatment of women with ROC

Centocor Ortho Biotech Products, L.P., today announced that it has voluntarily withdrawn the New Drug Application for trabectedin for the treatment of women with recurrent ovarian cancer. The withdrawal is based on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's recommendation that an additional Phase 3 study be conducted to obtain approval.

GPs could offer simple test for early detection of ovarian cancer

Health experts have said that hundreds of lives could be saved a year if GPs were quicker to spot symptoms of the disease - dubbed a “silent killer” because it is hard to diagnose early enough. Ovarian cancer kills almost 4,400 women in Britain every year. It kills one every two hours that makes it the fourth most common cancer in females. While almost three times as many die from breast cancer, those diagnosed with ovarian cancer are far more likely to die earlier.
