Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy receives health insurance coverage

The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) today announced its support of recent policy changes by Aetna Inc. and United Healthcare. The national health insurance giants will now cover laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, a newer method of bariatric surgery that is becoming increasingly popular as a treatment for morbid obesity.

Amylin Pharmaceuticals announces $174.1M total revenue for first-quarter 2010

Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today reported financial results for the quarter ended March 31, 2010. The Company reported total revenue of $174.1 million for the quarter ended March 31, 2010, which includes net product sales of $172.3 million. Non-GAAP operating loss was $3.8 million for the quarter ended March 31, 2010, compared to $19.9 million for the same period in 2009.

Phase II study: Hepatitis C patients receiving ANA598 bid plus SOC attain undetectable levels of virus

Anadys Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today that 72% of hepatitis C patients receiving ANA598 400 mg twice daily (bid) plus standard of care achieved undetectable levels of virus at week eight in an ongoing Phase II study, compared to 38% of patients receiving placebo plus SOC.

Trans fats back on the agenda in UK

Dariush Mozzaffarian and Meir J Stamper, wrote an article in the British Medical Journal urging the government to ban industrial trans fatty acids or TFAs. This adds to the plea of doctors and medical charities across the country, who want to follow the example of Denmark and New York City where TFAs have been eradicated without affecting the price, taste or availability of products.

They made it! In what is believed to be a world-first, a heart transplant patient along with his transplant doctor skied over 100 miles, over ice, snow drifts, across open water, through gale-force winds and freezing temperatures to make it to the North Pole early Thursday morning.
