Genentech, a member of the Roche Group, today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has accepted the company's supplemental Biologics License Application for the use of a Perjeta (pertuzumab) regimen before surgery (neoadjuvant treatment) in people with HER2-positive early stage breast cancer.

Bayer, Onyx submit sNDA to FDA, marketing authorization application to EMA for Nexavar tablets

Bayer HealthCare and Onyx Pharmaceuticals today announced the submission of a supplemental New Drug Application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and an application for marketing authorization to the European Medicines Agency for the oral multi-kinase inhibitor Nexavar (sorafenib) tablets for the treatment of locally advanced or metastatic radioactive iodine-refractory differentiated thyroid cancer.

Nano and laser technology packed into small device tests antibiotic treatment in minutes

Researchers at EPFL have built a matchbox-sized device that can test for the presence of bacteria in a couple of minutes, instead of up to several weeks. A nano-lever vibrates in the presence of bacterial activity, while a laser reads the vibration and translates it into an electrical signal that can be easily read-the absence of a signal signifies the absence of bacteria.

When a breast tumor is detected, many women opt to have a lumpectomy, which is surgery designed to remove the diseased tissue while preserving the breast. But during this procedure, doctors cannot learn right away whether all of the cancerous tissue has been removed, with no microscopic signs that cancer cells were left behind.

Approximately 39 percent of patients with SCLC are diagnosed with limited-stage disease, meaning the cancer is only present in one lung, but may have spread to lymph nodes or tissue between the lungs.
