Amgen announces primary results from XGEVA Phase 3 trial in castrate-resistant prostate cancer

Amgen today announced primary results of a pivotal Phase 3 trial demonstrating that XGEVA significantly increased bone metastasis-free survival for more than four months in men with castrate-resistant metastatic prostate cancer that has not yet spread to bone.

Fewer emergency rooms raises concern

According to a report released Tuesday this week, the number of emergency rooms has dropped by more than a quarter over the past two decades, while patient visits have kept rising. This has resulted in overcrowded ERs that can't provide optimal care for their patients, according to the new findings, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Coffee reduces prostate cancer risk

In the 20-year study of almost 50,000 men, researchers noted that those who drank at least six cups a day were 20 per cent less likely to get prostate cancer than those who never took coffee. Strikingly, they were 60 per cent less likely than the non-coffee drinkers to die of the disease. The researchers also say that decaffeinated coffee is just as effective.

Cytori Therapeutics announces independent clinical study results in breast reconstruction presented at the Association of Breast Surgery conference

Cytori Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ: CYTX) reports that surgeons from North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust have presented clinical outcomes using Adipose-Derived Regenerative Cell (ADRC) fat grafting in reconstructive breast surgery at the Association of Breast Surgery Conference in Manchester, UK, May 16-17, 2011. The procedure, referred to by Cytori as RESTORE, was separately investigated in Cytori’s own RESTORE 2 trial.

Coffee provides protections from a type of breast cancer: Study

For the study they compared coffee consumption in postmenopausal women with breast cancer and women of the same age without cancer, they found those who drank five or more cups of java a day showed a 0.43 times lower risk of estrogen-receptor negative cancers. Around one in four women diagnosed with breast cancer will have estrogen-receptor negative breast cancer, which is often resilient to drug treatment and requires intensive chemotherapy.

Researchers look for surrogate endpoints to predict early benefit of cancer drugs

Great hopes are always placed in new cancer therapies. However, whether new surgical techniques, drugs or radiation therapies actually prolong the life of cancer patients, or even cure them, can often only be reliably assessed after several years' of testing. Researchers are therefore looking for proxy markers that after initiation of cancer therapy can reliably predict as quickly as possible whether the treatment has a benefit.

INESC Porto and FEUP developed software to automatically analyse and validate mammograms. The software, Semantic PACS, can be incorporated into hospital IT systems and it categorises each new mammography using automatic descriptive methods and search methods that compare the semantic contents of the images stored.
