Genetic mutations predict breast cancer relapse

A large genetics study has identified genetic mutations specific to recurrent breast cancer cells. Screening for these mutations in breast cancer tumours could therefore allow doctors to identify patients most at risk of their cancer returning. The relevant genes can then be targeted to prevent recurrence of the cancer.

NAMS panel provides recommendations to help women manage menopause-associated vasomotor symptoms

Some three-quarters of North American women have menopausal hot flashes, but many cannot use hormones for medical reasons or choose not to. Numerous products and techniques are promoted for hot flashes, but do they work, and are they safe? To answer these questions, a North American Menopause Society panel of experts weighed the evidence and made recommendations in a position statement, "Nonhormonal management of menopause-associated vasomotor symptoms," published online today in the Society's journal, Menopause.

A new survey released today shows 73 percent of Americans are aware of genetic testing for hereditary cancers – a significant increase over just a few years ago. Previous research found that in 2010 less than half of the Americans surveyed said they were aware of genetic testing.
